For fourteen years – from 2007 until 2021 – Hidden with Christ Ministries operated an orphanage in Moshi, Tanzania called Treasures of Africa Children’s Home. Our goal was to provide a place where an orphaned, abandoned or vulnerable child could find refuge and healing for his broken spirit, soul and body and be raised to become a godly leader for the nation of Tanzania. We took in children as young as newborn infants through the age of 12. We educated the children at the best possible private English medium schools available to prepare them for advanced education.
However, we have always believed that orphaned children need families not institutions – and have prayed over the years for all our children to find a forever family with whom they could live. But adoption has not been commonplace in Tanzanian culture, and international adoptions were not allowed by law. Foster care (as we know it the U.S.) simply had not existed. We had even suggested the “foster care” concept to the Social Welfare authorities previously, but they dismissed the idea because the law did not allow placement of orphans with non-relatives.
In 2020, a dramatic change came about. The central government announced its intention to begin closing orphanages across Tanzania and moving children into families. Suddenly, a new program somewhat similar to foster care was authorized.
The local Social Welfare officer was thrilled that we were ready to begin the hard work of finding families for the TOA children because it supported the government’s new goals. He accepted the idea that we proposed about recruiting families from among our own Treasures of Africa staff. We were determined that our kids would NOT be sent to live with strangers but with our Christian staff who had loved and prayed for them for years. This was an idea we felt was inspired by the Lord.
By mid-2021 all the Treasures of Africa children had settled into their new families. Our newly minted Treasures of Africa KIDZ Project was launched and focused on providing education and medical care for all the former orphanage residents as well as expanding to add other orphaned and vulnerable children to the program.
At the time of this writing, the TOA KIDZ Project has sponsored students attending Preschool, Primary School, Secondary School, Advanced Secondary School, Vocational Training Schools, Colleges and Universities.
